Claw Treatment: Claw processing is done through microwave energy that treats the eponychium, or nail forming portion of the toe, allowing the bird to retain the entire toe without the claw present. Offering many attractive benefits such as bloodless treatment, reduced infection, and increased employee output, the MCP is capable of processing 1200 to 1500 birds per hour (depending on operator). In addition to increased output, the microwave system is more accurate, efficient and easer to operate than older methods (i.e. hot blade unit, electric spark). Control settings are fully adjustable, allowing the amount of toe treatment to be set by the poult room supervisor.
Loading: The sex of each bird is determined by trained machine operators who then place, or load, the bird into the machine through a specialized holding shackle which hangs the bird and counts it as it is passed on to the treatment area. The shackle holds the bird in place while a clamp swings up to align the claws into proper position and allow them to be treated. Once treated, the bird, having already been sexed, is placed (sorted) in its corresponding lane (male or female) based on the sex of the bird.
